Saint-Étienne Island and the collegiate church
At the heart of Melun, Saint-Étienne Island splits the Seine into two arms and holds Notre-Dame Collegiate Church, one of the oldest in the region. Wandering around its Romanesque stones, following the quays, crossing the Pont aux Fruits: it is an ideal first-date circuit, mixing heritage and riverbanks. The Town Hall to the south and the Prefecture to the north frame this island inhabited since antiquity.
Vaux-le-Vicomte within reach
A few kilometres away, Vaux-le-Vicomte, a masterpiece by Le Vau, Le Brun and Le Nôtre, is a dream Sunday date. Its parterres, canals and great garden inspired Versailles. In summer, candle-lit evenings turn the estate into a fairy-tale set. A little further, Blandy-les-Tours Castle offers its strong towers and medieval courtyard for a striking contrast.
Place Saint-Jean and city life
Back in town, Place Saint-Jean and its cafés, the lanes around Place de la Porte-de-Paris and the covered market make up everyday Melun, that of terraces and quick errands. On Lyad, Melun locals share their favourite spots and weekend plans; it is up to you to find someone to push open the door of a riverside restaurant for a dinner.
